How parents and carers bring therapy to life at home
🌟 Why your role in therapy is important
You are your child’s most important teacher and advocate. Therapy doesn’t need to stop when the session ends - it comes to life in your daily routines, play, and family connections. As the expert on your child, you bring the knowledge of what motivates, comforts and excites them.
By weaving meaningful moments into your child’s world, you help them grow skills in ways that feel natural, supportive and fun. You are a key part of therapy progress and goal achievement.
🏡 Everyday opportunities to incorporate therapy activities at home
- Daily routines: Encourage independence in dressing, mealtimes, or packing a bag for school. Small, repeated actions help build confidence.
- Communication support: Model using words, gestures or AAC (communication devices) during regular interactions. Celebrate all forms of communication equally.
- Fine motor practice: Activities like drawing, Lego, cooking, or even helping with laundry build hand strength and coordination without feeling like “work.”
- Gross motor skills: Play at the park, climbing, or dancing at home can strengthen balance and coordination in a fun way.
🎲 Everyday resources that can support therapy activities at home
- Pots, pans, and spoons → rhythm and coordination games
- Favourite books → communication and connection
- Cardboard boxes → obstacle courses or imaginative play
- Household chores → real-life skill practice (pouring, sorting, folding)
💡 How to incorporate a neurodiverse affirming approach
- Focus on strengths and interests – join your child in what excites them.
- Respect differences in how your child plays, communicates or learns.
- Progress may look different for every child – celebrate each small step forward.
- Therapy is about supporting participation and confidence, not “fixing” who your child is.
When therapy extends beyond the clinic and into your home, every moment becomes an opportunity for growth and connection. By embracing your child’s individuality and celebrating progress in all its forms, you create a nurturing environment where skills can flourish naturally. Remember, the most powerful therapy happens through love, play, and everyday life - and you are at the heart of it.
