Functional Capacity Assessments
BlueRocket provides Functional Capacity Assessments to NDIS clients of all ages in the Perth Metro area.

How It Works
A Functional Capacity Assessment (FCA) is performed by a qualified Occupational Therapist (OT) to evaluate your current abilities in everyday tasks. The evaluation aspect of an FCA usually takes place in your home.
Through a mix of consultation, observation and assessment, our BlueRocket OTs gain a fuller picture of your strengths and challenges, allowing them to identify the level and type of supports that can improve your daily functioning. Their personalised recommendations are then delivered in a comprehensive report to support NDIS planning decisions and access to funding.
Steps Involved
An FCA is typically completed over a 4–6 week period, from initial consultation to final report. When conducting FCAs, our OTs follow a structured, person‑centred approach to help you gain clarity, access supports and achieve greater independence.
Initial consultation & information gathering
First, we get to know you. This includes exploring your goals, challenges and daily routines across your different environments (e.g. home, community, school or workplace). We also involve key people in your support network to gain a deeper understanding of your needs. They can include family members, teachers, support workers and other allied health professionals.
Observation & standardised assessment
You’re observed performing everyday tasks either in person or virtually to understand where supports may be needed. This includes activities related to self‑care, meal prep, mobility and communication. We may work with validated tools—physical, cognitive and psychosocial—to objectively assess your abilities.
Report writing & support recommendations
We compile a report that identifies your strengths as well as the barriers you face across daily activities. We offer tailored recommendations that align with your goals and support independence. These include:
- Support hours
- Assistive Technology (e.g. wheelchairs, specialised beds)
- Therapy goals
- Home Modifications (e.g. grab rails, non-slip bathmats)
- Access to community programs.
The report can assist with NDIS funding decisions, plan reviews or future planning. You'll have a chance to read this report and provide any feedback before it’s finalised.
Follow‑up & interpretation
We provide continuing support to explain the report, liaise with your NDIS team or other allied health providers, and support you in applying the recommendations effectively.
Who We Support
An FCA offers a clear understanding of an NDIS participant's abilities and support needs. It’s an ideal starting point on your pathway toward greater independence and wellbeing, providing both tailored recommendations and evidence for funding. FCAs are especially valuable for:
- People making an initial application for NDIS funding – it offers a detailed account of your support needs and a personalised plan to help you get on the right track faster.
- Existing NDIS participants seeking a plan review – an FCA may be advised if your needs have changed. It can reassess your situation and offer updated recommendations, including for additional funding, to keep you moving toward your goals.
- Existing NDIS participants undergoing an eligibility reassessment - an FCA can include information that is considered as part of an NDIS eligibility reassessment.
An FCA is not a requirement of the NDIS. You can also apply for funding with a letter from a health professional.
