Scruffy goals recognise that progress isn’t always neat, linear, or easily measured - especially in neurodiversity-affirming practice. Scruffy goals capture the bigger picture: confidence, joy, participation, and meaningful engagement. For example: “Sam will feel more confident joining group play at school and will choose to participate in a shared game with peers at least once a week.”

By using both SMART and Scruffy goals, we ensure therapy is both practical and meaningful. Families know exactly what’s being worked on and why it matters, while also celebrating the less tangible but equally important outcomes, such as independence, confidence, connection, and well-being.
